Somewhere Over the Rainbow
by Dreamer on Feb.16, 2009, under Musings

Whenever a rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant between me and all life on the earth.” – Genesis 9:16-17
Last summer, I took a week off my ministry and went to my best friend’s place to refresh and try to commune with the Lord. It was during that time that Typhoon Cosme hit and many municipalities in Pangasinan and other neigboring provinces were affected. I have seen first hand the devastation that this natural disaster caused to the livelihood and homes of thousands of families.
I was practically up the whole night the typhoon struck. I was aware of the trees falling all around the church where we evacuated. I was aware of the whirlwind that made thousands of families homeless for days and weeks.
What happened filled me with despair and a sense of sorrow for those who were affected but the greatest lesson that I have learned out of that experience is he one that I have received while musing one afternoon a few days after the disaster struck.Like a gem etched on a colorless and hopeless horizon, I saw a rainbow then and that reminded me of a story in Genesis 5-9.
The world, on that portion of the Scriptures, was struck not just by typhoon but by judgement from God. Cosme hit a handful of provinces in the Philippines with torrential rains and gusty winds for a period of a few days but the Lord caused the springs of the deep and the clouds of the sky to flood the earth- all eight continents of it or if the Continental Drift Theory is true, the super continent Pangea, for a full forty days and nights. The flood that ensued lasted 150 days or five lunar months.
Imagine the wreck and devastation. Imagine the gloom and the hopelessness that Noah and his family experienced. In a world of thousands, only eight people remained. What a tragedy?
In times of problems and negative situations, it is sometimes easier to survey the havoc, to cry over the ruins or count how much pain the disaster has caused. As a result, we despair and feel hopeless.
We get do easily sidetracked by how a difficult situation looks like that we often lose perspective and end up out of focus in the middle of nowhere.
But as it was with Noah and his family, it was never God’s will that we look at the devastation caused by any situation and loose hope. Remember that after the flood the Lord caused the ark to land on a high ground. After every devastating life disaster, we start over by God’s grace on a higher ground.
On top of it, God etched on the gray horizon that may be devoid of life and color a rainbow of remembrance and somewhere over that rainbow is Himself poring over the mess.
The clear message of this story from long ago to modern folks like us is this: somehere over the rainbow, God remembers.
